English preface
The potter tells about Selinunte 628 BC.
Preface
All the populations who conquered Sicily made it great with small and big things because, being in the center of the Mediterranean sea, it has always been land of landing and commercial exchange. Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Aragonese and then Spanish and Bourbons. Sicilians fought against the French and, with the revolt of the "Vespers", they were defeated and driven out to bring back the Aragonese. Garibaldi, who is said to be heroe of the two worlds, landed in Sicily to unify the kingdom of the Two Sicilies to those people with whom we had to start living together.
The story "lu Bummularu" that I am about to write is set during the glorious Greek period in Selinunte and speaks about a small thing that remained in use until the 1960s. All families used it during the grape harvest, the olive harvest and for all those times that we went to the countryside to work or for fun. We all know the great things that the Greeks made in Sicily, but not everyone knows what is "lu bummulu", from the Greek word bombùlion which means vase, but that Sicilians still call with this name, a small container used to keep water and wine fresh and which, thanks to some artisans, is still created today in the famous "stazzuna" where clay is worked to create vases, tiles, gutters, jars and of course bummels for lovers of traditional things of ancient generations.
